Washington’s jobless rate takes a step back in February
OLYMPIA– After posting the first job gains in more than a year in January, Washington’s economy dropped an estimated 8,300 jobs in February. Washington’s unemployment rate remained above 9 percent for the 7th straight month, rising up from January’s 9.3 percent to an estimated 9.5 percent in February. The U.S. unemployment rate for February was 9.7 percent.

In 2009, Employment Security investigators detected more than $10 million in unemployment benefits that individuals acquired through fraud. Department auditors also discovered 7,671 workers whom employers had failed to report – which amounted to nearly $2 million in unpaid taxes.

Washington employers earn $35 million break on 2009 federal taxes
OLYMPIA – Tax-filing season is bringing $35 million of good news to Washington employers who hired certain hard-to-place job seekers in 2009. That’s the amount of Work Opportunity Tax Credits that more than 4,300 employers in Washington can deduct from their 2009 federal income taxes.
