Private-sector jobs increased in June
OLYMPIA – Private-sector payrolls continued to grow in June and Washington’s unemployment rate fell for the third straight month, to 8.9 percent – the lowest rate since April 2009. The May unemployment rate was revised upward from 9.1 percent to 9.2 percent after more analysis.

New law improves tax fairness for employers
OLYMPIA – A new law improves the fairness of Washington’s tax system for employers who fail to pay unemployment taxes on time. Until now, delinquent employers were assigned the maximum possible tax rate, plus a penalty amount, regardless of whether their regular tax rate was 1 percent or 6 percent.

Increase in 2009 wages brings small bump in jobless benefits
OLYMPIA – The loss of thousands of low-paying jobs helped to increase the average wage in Washington in 2009, according to the Employment Security Department. The 1.9 percent increase drove the average annual wage to $47,153, the smallest increase since 2004. The average weekly wage was $906.
