SERVES overview
Each program year, the Washington Service Corps conducts an exciting learning event for all individually-placed members. For Program Year 2012-2013, SERVES will be held October 29-31, 2012 in Yakima at the Yakima Convention Center. Watch for more information to come in September!
Called the SERVES Institute, it is a training conference that offers workshops and networking with members who are serving across the State of Washington. With approximately 400 AmeriCorps and VISTA individually-placed members attending, SERVES has something for everyone.
The workshops are great opportunities to get professional training in a variety of areas. Members learn more about themselves, grow as leaders, and learn about other programs and volunteer opportunities. Networking with other professionals offers the chance to learn from other members’ challenges and successes.
SERVES offers workshops that help members in setting goals during their year of service, as well as completing core required training requirements. Session topics include how to become an effective communicator, learning to work in culturally diverse communities, becoming a great reading tutor, learning to be a lively group facilitator, and becoming an active volunteer recruiter.
Taking into consideration members’ budgets, time constraints, and priorities, the SERVES Institute is typically held in the central part of the state and The Washington Service Corps provides all lodging and food for the duration of the Institute.
The SERVES Institute gives members the support and training needed to gain the best results during a term of service. Not only do members enhance their skills, and develop professionally and personally, they often meet lifelong friends.
