Can your benefits be extended?

Washington currently has two different extensions available:

  • Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) is a program that pays up to 33 additional weeks of unemployment benefits.
  • Extended Benefits (EB) is a program that pays up to 20 additional weeks of unemployment benefits.

We must pay EUC before EB.

See "What's new for the latest update on EUC.

Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)

Congress and the President approved emergency unemployment compensation (EUC) that provides up to 33 weeks of additional unemployment benefits to those who qualify.

We mail paper applications to potentially eligible claimants.

Extended Benefits (EB)

The U.S. Department of Labor notified the state Employment Security Department that Washington qualifies for state extended benefits as a result of a rising unemployment rate. This state extended benefits program is different from the federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program approved by Congress in 2008.

Though this program is effective the week of February 15, eligible claimants will continue on EUC until those benefits run out. At that time they may be eligible for state extended benefits.

EB pays up to 20 weeks of benefits. The first payable week is the week ending February 21, 2009.

We mail paper applications to potentially eligible claimants.
