Recovery and reinvestment at Employment Security

On February 16, 2009, Governor Chris Gregoire signed the first piece of her recovery plan for Washington. The Economic Security Act temporarily increases unemployment benefits in our state, which will push nearly $200 million into Washington’s communities – helping to sustain families and the businesses that serve them. The act also expands two unemployment-insurance programs that aid employers and workers in tough times.

A day later, President Obama signed the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Approximately $65 million will flow into Washington for workforce programs administered by the Employment Security Department, as well as approximately $204 million by temporarily increasing unemployment benefits.
