OLYMPIA – Several outdoor facilities in the Wenatchee community will get much-needed maintenance and repair this month when some 730 members of the Washington Service Corps descend on the city for a four-day training conference.

On March 27-30, Service Corps members will attend workshops at the Wenatchee Convention Center that will prepare them for activities they will perform across the state as Service Corps volunteers.

But in keeping with their service mission, more than 120 of the corps members will spend time during the conference working on maintenance and cleanup on the Apple Capitol Loop Trail, landscaping at Wenatchee Rotary Park and Link Transit Columbia Street bus station, helping with renovations and maintenance on the Wenatchee Riverfront Railway. They also will make silver ribbons for Elder Abuse Awareness.

“These community projects are an important part of the learning experience for Service Corps volunteers, and it’s a nice way to thank the Wenatchee community for welcoming us,”said Nancy Pringle, the Service Corps director.

“This is the first time we have held the training conference in Wenatchee. We want to show how much we help communities in Washington,” said Don Wise, event coordinator.

The Washington Service Corps is administered by the state Employment Security Department. Members, ages 17 and up, commit to 10 and a half months of community service that meets educational, environmental, homeland security, human service and public safety needs. In return for service, they receive a modest living allowance and an educational scholarship.
