OLYMPIA – The state Employment Security Department has awarded more than $1.9 million in grants to provide an array of education, human and public-improvement services in communities across Washington over the coming year.
The funding comes from the federal AmeriCorps and Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) programs. Employment Security distributes the money to local communities to cover operating costs and provide stipends to Washington Service Corps members, who will spend 10½ months tutoring students, building affordable housing, improving emergency readiness, and rehabilitating streams and trails.
“We are proud of the good that can be done in schools and neighborhoods around the state through these grants,” said Karen Lee, commissioner of the Employment Security Department. “The people who participate in these programs learn an ethic of service and citizenship that they will remember for the rest of their lives. It enriches them and our communities.”
Washington Service Corps grants this year are supporting 23 projects organized by school districts, counties, learning centers, housing authorities and non-profit groups in 22 of Washington’s 39 counties.
Created by the state legislature in 1983 and administered by the Employment Security Department, the Washington Service Corps engages the talents, energy and enthusiasm of civically minded adults, aged 17 and up, and gives them an opportunity to serve their communities.
