The opportunity
The Employment Security Department’s (ESD) Information Technology Systems Division (ITSD) is recruiting for a data network specialist. This position provides expert consultation and specialized analysis, design, development, acquisition, installation, maintenance, programming, testing, quality assurance, troubleshooting and problem resolution tasks for the department’s data network which provides connectivity of all major organization-wide, high risk/high impact, mission-critical applications, computing and telecommunication systems.

Major duties

  • In the area of data networking, conducts capacity planning to determine department-wide needs. Analyzes and assesses industry direction and analyzes and makes recommendations for new capabilities that may be applied to the department.

     

  • Oversees the daily operations of the enterprise data network systems. Independently identifies and resolves operational problems, both hardware and software, for the enterprise data network systems which provide the connectivity of all the department’s high risk/high impact such as accounting, budgeting, payroll, purchasing or similar centralized organization-wide information functions.

     

  • Analyzes industry-wide trends and makes recommendations for improvements and efficiencies in the area of data networking.

     

  • Develops measurement and monitoring methods for the data network.

     

  • Creates and supports pre-production data network environments such as tests, demos and production for major systems.

     

  • Provides expert consultation for large-scale projects or enterprise systems that integrate new technology and carry out organization-wide information technology functions and impact other institutions or agencies.

     

  • Performs highly-complex tasks such as conducting capacity planning to determine department-wide needs and make recommendations. Designs complex department-wide enterprise data networking systems crossing multiple agencies.

     

  • Enhances existing high-risk/high-impact mission critical data network systems.

     

  • Functions as a recognized expert who is sought out by others in resolving or assessing controversial or precedent-setting issues.

     

Required qualifications
Four years of information technology experience such as consulting, analyzing, designing, programming, installing and/or maintaining computer software applications, hardware, telecommunications, or network infrastructure equipment, directing projects, providing customer or technical support in information technology; or administering or supervising staff who performed work in any of these information technology disciplines.

Special Requirements:
Two years experience, within the last four years, as a network engineer supporting Cisco products with specific focus on Catalyst 6500 series switches.

 

Desired qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in computer science (preferred).
  • Cisco Certified Network Association (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP), or Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP).
  • Recent data center switching and routing experience.
